Night Guards
Numerous individuals make use of night guards, a common practice among many. Night guards are often prescribed for one prevailing reason – your dentist or hygienist has identified excessive tooth wear during your dental examinations.
However, wearing night guards can be attributed to other factors as well, such as temporomandibular disorders or instances of morning discomfort in the masseter muscle, indicative of teeth clenching or nocturnal grinding.
I often liken a night guard to an insurance policy for your teeth. There may be instances when we're uncertain whether a patient grinds their teeth, even if they've had a night guard for years. In such cases, my recommendation is unequivocal – wear it. Think of it as dental insurance; it safeguards against tooth chipping or breakage, as long as you consistently wear your night guard.
Here at our practice, the process involves a visit to our office, where we take a digital scan of your teeth. Subsequently, we employ 3D printing technology to create models, onto which we fabricate thermoplastic night guards. Once you have your night guard, we make any necessary adjustments to ensure it aligns with your bite correctly. Furthermore, we recommend soaking the night guard in warm water at home before placing it in your mouth. This precautionary step is crucial, as failing to do so may result in the night guard breaking upon insertion, given that they conform to the shape of your teeth.
Should you have any inquiries about night guards or require additional information, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office. We are here to provide the answers and guidance you seek.
