Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is something that really needs to be diagnosed and treated very carefully and very precisely. At your new patient exam, we'll be looking at the gums and bone support around your teeth to identify if you do have periodontal disease or not.
Periodontal disease; perio means "peri" which means next to, and "donal" means teeth. So it's basically the disease of what's next to your teeth, meaning your gums and your bone. So what periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and bone around your teeth. The good thing about periodontal disease is that it can be treated and maintained to the levels that we see you at.
In the illustration in the video, what you can see on the left side is a tooth without periodontal disease. The bone is nice and tight and high around the neck of the tooth, which is what we want to see in all areas of your mouth.
In the second picture in the middle, you can see that there has been bone loss around the tooth and there has been some periodontal disease present. In this last picture, this tooth has severe periodontal disease and the bone loss is greater than 50% of the root length.
Everyone's mouth has different scenarios, even from the front of the mouth to the back of the mouth with respect to health or disease of the tissues. So it's really important to have an independent assessment done.
Hopefully this gave you some insight into what periodontal disease is and please let us know if we can answer any more questions around it.
