What is a filling? It's one of the most common things you hear about at a dental office, "You need a filling." So, what a filling actually is, is when you have an area of decay in the tooth. Decay occurs when teeth enter your mouth, they're hard, not soft.
A cavity, on the other hand, is where there's a softening of the tooth, and what needs to happen is that the softened or decayed area of the tooth is removed, and then a filling replaces that decayed part of the tooth.
The most common area for a patient to develop a cavity in the tooth is on the biting surface of the tooth. The second most common location is between the teeth where teeth commonly touch, and that's because it's a more challenging area to keep clean.
In our office, we primarily use white fillings, which is a common industry standard. However, there are different types of fillings available now, such as glass ionomer.
